THE CITY OF NIZHNY NOVGOROD
The city of Nizhny Novgorod was founded in 1221 by Grand Duke Georgy Vsevolodovich.
Nizhny Novgorod has been colloquially shortened to Nizhny and has a population of
1,251,000, the fifth largest city in Russia. The city is an important economic,
transport and cultural center of the Russian Federation. It is the economic and
cultural center of the vast Volga-Vyatka economic region, and also the administrative
center of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and Volga Federal District.
